Face with red bricks and terra cotta tiles, the McKay Apartment-Hotel replace the frame building in 1913. The sturdy new building was given a foundation that would allow for more stories, but 1921 plans to add three more were not fulfilled. The namesake owners, D.R. and Mathilde McKay, retired instead and “devoted considerable of their time to traveling.”
