Another unpaved road into the picturesque unknown.   Of might Horace Sykes have decided to omit all descriptions so that his universals would not be reduced to the mundane anxieties and/or pleasures of mere identification?

  1. I should think it would be the other way round; if he’d wanted viewers to focus on the universal then orecise descriptions would have headed off that puzzling impulse.
